FRP Grating Clips and Fixings: Types, Spacing and Hardware
Unclipped or under-clipped panels are the source of nearly every “the deck rattles” call. The fix costs a few percent of the package and ten minutes of pattern discipline.
Clip types
| Clip | Where | Function |
|---|---|---|
| “C” clip | Panel-to-panel edges | Joins adjacent panels; anti-creep |
| “W” / edge clip | Exposed outer edges | Anchors perimeter to support |
| “M” / hold-down clip | Panel against wall / kerb | Secures single-panel edge |
| Lift clip / eye | Trench covers, removable panels | Tool-free removal for access |
Spacing that works
- “C” clips: at every 4-panel intersection, then every ~1 200 mm along shared edges
- “W” clips: every ~600 mm on exposed edges (wind-exposed decks: 400–500 mm)
- “M” clips: every ~1 200 mm against supports
- Every panel corner anchored at least once
Hardware metallurgy
Molded clips pair with 316 stainless bolts in every chemical, marine and outdoor application — galvanized hardware is the false economy that rusts before the deck's first birthday and stains the panel edges. Interior dry service can take plated hardware, but the price difference is small enough that 316 everywhere is the standard answer.
Troubleshooting a rattling deck
- Drumming in the field → missing “C” clips mid-panel
- Rocking at edges → supports unshimmed; lift, shim, re-lay
- Creep toward a walkway edge → no hold-downs on that run
- Rattle at a wall → “M” clips omitted or gaps over 10 mm
