How Much Does FRP Grating Weigh — and Why the Answer Saves Money
Weight is the FRP property nobody specifies and every project benefits from. Typical values:
| Panel | Weight (kg/m²) | Steel equivalent | Aluminum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Molded 25 mm | 12.6 | ~25 | ~10 |
| Molded 38 mm | 19.4 | ~30–35 | ~12 |
| Molded 50 mm | 25.4 | ~40+ | ~15 |
| Pultruded I-50 | 24.9 | ~40+ | ~15 |
Where the weight saving lands
- Structure: 38 mm FRP at 19.4 kg/m² saves ~14 kg/m² of dead load vs steel — on a 500 m² deck that is 7 tonnes the supports never carry, often eliminating a strengthening assessment on retrofit work
- Installation: a 1 × 3 m molded panel weighs ~58 kg — a two-person lift. Steel equivalents need four people or a crane, with the permits and time both imply
- Transport: a 40 ft container carries roughly 40–50 % more FRP square metres than steel by weight — on containerized export projects this materially lowers the per-m² freight line
- Floating structures: pontoons and floating walkways gain freeboard directly from deck weight saved
The honest limits
Weight is not a strength: FRP deflects more per kilo of load than steel at equal depth, which is why depth selection and spans matter. And ultralight decks need clip restraint in wind-exposed areas — a 19 kg/m² deck in a coastal storm zone needs its clip pattern taken seriously. Neither point changes the conclusion: on structures, crews and freight, FRP's low weight is real money — it just shows up in lines of the budget that the material price comparison never includes.
