Transmission Utility: 1,400 Non-Conductive Cable Trench Covers
| Location | Alberta, Canada |
| Completed | 2024-07 |
| Quantity | 1 400 trench covers |
| Products | Molded grating covers 38 mm · Sealed-edge panels · Lift-clip hardware |
The challenge
Steel trench covers needed periodic bonding checks, corroded at the edges, and had become a lift-injury concern. Winter snow-clearing machines crossed some runs, so covers had to carry wheel loads well beyond pedestrian duty. Utility standards allowed only non-conductive covers inside the fenced switchyard.
The solution
1 400 covers in 38 mm molded FRP with sealed edges and integral lift eyes, laid out run by run from the utility's trench survey; high-traffic machine routes upgraded to 50 mm panels with the load case documented. All covers finished in safety yellow with a gritted surface.
Outcomes
- Bonding-check work orders for trench covers removed from the maintenance system
- Two-person lift restored on every standard cover — manual-handling finding closed
- Machine-rated covers performed through a full snow-season cycle
- Utility issued a province-wide standard detail based on the project
