Highway Bridge: Dead-Load-Limited Walkway Solved with FRP
| Location | São Paulo, Brazil |
| Completed | 2024-01 |
| Quantity | 460 m² |
| Products | Molded grating 38 mm, ISO polyester · FRP handrail · Stair treads |
The challenge
The bridge needed a continuous under-deck inspection walkway. The original structure had no reserve capacity: steel grating exceeded the allowable added dead load, and the coastal-influenced climate meant galvanizing would fight de-icing salt runoff for its whole life.
The solution
460 m² of 38 mm ISO polyester molded grating with gritted surface and high-visibility nosings at stair landings, plus lightweight FRP handrail bracketed to the same stringers. The walkway load case was submitted with the engineer's dead-load check and accepted without modification.
Outcomes
- Added dead load within the structural limit without strengthening works
- Chloride runoff from the deck no longer attacks the walkway material
- Inspection access enabled — satisfying the federal bridge-inspection mandate
- High-vis nosings specified for the maintenance crews' night access
