FRP Grating for Desalination & Water Utilities
A reverse-osmosis desalination plant is 90 % salt-handling equipment. Every steel walkway, ladder and cover in the intake, outfall and membrane galleries begins corroding from commissioning day — super-duplex steel slows it down but multiplies the budget. FRP grating and access systems are simply immune to chloride, at a fraction of the alloy cost.
Where it goes
- Intake screening decks and traveling screen platforms
- RO membrane gallery walkways and dosing areas
- Outfall structure access and sampling platforms
- Brine disposal channel covers
- Clarifier and filter gallery walks in conventional water works
- Chemical dosing (antiscalant, chlorine) bund walkways
System selection
| Area | System | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Intake / outfall (splash and immersion) | Vinyl ester molded grating | Highest chloride and osmosis resistance |
| Membrane galleries | ISO polyester, mini mesh | Wash-down friendly; small-part safe |
| Chemical dosing areas | Vinyl ester | Confirm against the resistance chart |
| Ladders and handrail | Matching pultruded system | One supplier, one warranty |
Life-cycle arithmetic on the coast
Galvanized walkways on a coastal intake last 3–6 years. Duplex steel lasts decades but costs three to five times more installed. FRP vinyl ester grating lasts 20+ years at mild-steel-plus pricing — which is why it has become the default intake specification across new-build desalination projects in the Gulf and Mediterranean.
